Sunderland, Wigan, Derby eliminated from League Cup by lower league clubs

LONDON: Premier League clubs Sunderland, Wigan and Derby were knocked out of English soccer's League Cup by lower league teams on Tuesday.

Sunderland, which is managed by former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, lost 3-0 at Luton from the third-tier League One, while Wigan was beaten 1-0 by visiting League Championship side Hull.

Derby drew 2-2 with Blackpool before losing a penalty shootout 7-6.

The other Premier League clubs to enter England's second cup competition in this week's second round had better results.

Birmingham beat Hereford 2-1, Portsmouth beat Leeds 3-0, Fulham won 1-0 at Shrewsbury, and Reading won 1-0 after extra time at Swansea.

Aston Villa had the biggest win of the night's 21 matches with a 5-0 victory at Wrexham, and West Ham advanced but its 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers was marred by a suspected broken leg for England midfielder Kieron Dyer.

Nottingham Forest's match against local rival Leicester was abandoned at halftime with Forest leading 1-0 after Leicester defender Clive Clarke collapsed in the locker room.

Forest said Clarke had “a serious illness.”

Veteran former Chelsea striker Paul Furlong scored twice for Luton at Kenilworth Road to help pay back Sunderland for a 5-0 league loss last season.

While Sunderland was promoted from the League Championship following that win, Luton has since been relegated.

Morcambe won 3-1 after extra time at former powerhouse Wolves in another surprise.

Manchester City, Newcastle and Middlesbrough play Bristol City, Northampton and Barnsley in Wednesday's three League Cup matches.

The remaining Premier League clubs — those who have qualified for this season's European competitions — enter the League Cup in the next round.

Those include Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and defending champion Chelsea.

Couch, cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this month, told Yahoo.com he used HGH for about a week, under a doctor’s care, in hopes it would help him recover from shoulder surgery. He denied using steroids or any other banned drugs and said he had never seen the documents.

Yahoo.com reported Tuesday it had obtained documents from an anonymous source with Couch’s name printed across the top that called for extensive use of drugs banned by the league.

Pollution becoming Olympic-sized concern (AP)

“We know how to train for heat and humidity, but not a lot of research has been done on running in the polluted atmosphere we think we’ll find in Beijing,” Kyle O’Brien, an American marathoner who ran at the track and field world championship in Osaka, said Tuesday.

Therein, lies the problem.

Air pollution levels in China’s capital are nearly five times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended safety level.
